One part of proper troubleshooting is understanding the signal flow. Home studio signal flow is pretty basic for most of us, but if you don't understand where your signal is coming from and where it's going you can run into issues during your sessions. Signal flow in the studio is the path that sound takes from: sound source microphones cables preamps outboard gear to the computer. Understanding your signal flow will help you troubleshoot many of the problems that inevitably pop up during the recording process. By knowing signal flow, you can locate the source of the problem and create a work-around to keep a session and your creativity moving smoothly. Please check out our other church technology videos available at academyav.com In this video we are going to learn about signal flow. Signal flow is the path that the audio signal takes from the input to the output in an audio console. The signal first enters the console through an input. An input is usually a balanced signal that enters at mic level. Sometimes the signal may enter at line level which is 50dB higher than mic level. The input passes the signal to the PreAmp which is controlled by the gain. The preamp and gain raise the signal to the correct amplitude to pass through the console. The signal then passes to the on-board dynamics. This includes your compressor, gate, limiter, EQ, expander, and de-esser. The PFL or Pre Fader Listen is used to solo a channel for listen only in the monitor headphones. The signal then passes to a channel fader, which is used to adjust that channel's specific level during live mixing. Unlike gain, which is set at the beginning and held constant through the mix, the fader is used for fine tune adjustments during mixing. Then signal passes through the pan, which can change the placement of the channel from left to right in a stereo mix. It also passes through a mute, which can turn off the entire signal. After the pan and mute, the signal moves to the left and right bus where it is joined, or "mixed", with the signal from all other channels. this is also called the main bus. A bus is a mix down of several channels. After all the channels have been mixed, the level of the left and right bus is controlled by the Master Fader before the signal is outputted from the console. Once the signal from the left and right bus have passed through the master fader, the signal is then sent to the main outputs of the console to be sent to the speaker system. There are several side paths your signal can take from the main path as well. So let's jump back to the preamp. After the preamp comes the insert where the signal can be routed through an external effect. If there is nothing plugged into the insert the signal will bypass it. Also at this point, the signal may be routed through a Pre Aux Send. The Pre Aux send passes the signal of all selected channels to the Pre Aux Bus. which can be routed to stage monitors or in-ear monitors. After the Pre Aux Send comes the direct output. This is often used for multi-track recording or personal monitor systems. Sometimes the signal is also routed through a Post Aux Send which comes after the channel fader and routes to the Post Aux Bus. The Post Aux Bus is used to send multiple channels to the effects. Common effects include reverb and delay. The effects are then routed to an effect return that sends the signal back to the left and right bus. Signal Flow Graphs are a different way of looking at control systems, very similar to block diagrams but more streamlined and "easier" to optimize. SFGs are still a graphical representation of the relationships between the variables of the system, just like block diagrams, but as an alternative if the system becomes more complicated. As we go through this, we will learn about input nodes, output nodes, paths, forward path, loops, non-touching loops, path gain and how all of those items are used in Mason's Gain Formula to get the simplest transfer function possible. I have my laptop computer and I have my reference monitor. I want to make sure that the song I have loaded up on the left deck is going to be heard on the headphones and through the reference monitor. First thing is you want to make sure that your turntables are plugged into the right channels, right? So the left turntable is plugged into a phono channel, which is channel 1. Then the right turntable is going to come out of channel 2, on a phono channel, right? Turntables are always on phono, CDJ's or Ipods or Sarato or Tracker they're always online. You have the cartridge connected to the tone arm. You have your volume up on the gain. You have the volume up on the channel that you're going to play your signal. This signal is coming out to aux out which is connected to my reference monitor. So the way it's flowing, I have my song in Sarato loaded up on the left deck, I have my needle on the record. Once I hit play on the record you'll hear that signal flowing through this channel, channel 1 and then I'll be able to also hear it on my headphones. As I have my cue to the left deck when I raise up the volume and as I raise up the volume for aux out I'll be able to hear the signal coming out through the aux out. Volume levels, I'm playing my track, I can hear it on my headphones and now I raise up the volume and there goes the volume for the track that I'm playing on the left deck. So understanding the signal flow is the music is coming from the laptop connected USB into the TTM 57 Rane mixer which has Sarato built in. I have my needle on the record, as I hit play the record, that track is playing the signal, I see the LED lights on the mixer that means it's getting signal. As I raise up the volume I hear a signal, it's coming out the aux out, so pretty much it's just understanding ins and outs. And in signal is input, an out signal is output. Understanding what's connected to what and just understanding the overall flow so you can get the signal to come out through the main PA system or personal monitor and also your headphones. "
