Today I show how you can take a simple idea with some potential into a bigger concept and eventually a song by trying a few simple production techniques, arrangement ideas and creativity hacks. This video is aimed at beginners who are not familiar with arrangement and song structure. I start with a simple 4 bar drum loop with a bass line and try to arrange it into a structure and add some variety to the song. This video is aimed at beginners who are not familiar with arrangement and song structure. I start with a simple chord loop and try to arrange it into a structure and add some variety to the song. The video covers 3 topics: 1) Finding a theme for your song 2) Filling out the song with rhythm and tone 3) How to arrange your music into a structure that makes sense Time Stamps - 0:30 - The original loop 1:00 - Improvising to form new ideas 3:30 - New chord ideas and humanizing the loop 4:00 - Song structure 4:50 - Adding rhythm and tone 6:30 - Adding a synth to keep the tempo 8:00 - Adding a bass to match the song 9:10 - Drums 10:00 - More synths! 11:00 - Strings 12:45 - re arranging the song (using multiple playlists) 14:30 - Transitions 16:00 - Recording some guitar You can see from the video that I am not getting into the mixing and mastering as I create a song. This is after a few years of taking the mixing far too seriously in the early stages. Some prefer to mix everything as they go but I have found that it kills the creative energy for me! I try to match sounds well so that I don't need huge amounts of EQ and Compression right away. There are no rights and wrongs when making music. Common Structures for a song include: Intro (4 Bars) Verse (8 -16 Bars) + Prechorus (Optional) Chorus(8 - 16 Bars) 2nd Verse (8 - 16 Bars) + Prechorus (Optional) Chorus (8-16 Bars) Sometime pre choruses are used depending on the genre, in my case I don't really have a pre chorus but in many genres it's essential to create build up and energy for the Chorus/Drop. Today I show how you can take a simple idea with some potential into a bigger concept and eventually a song by trying a few simple production techniques, arrangement ideas and creativity hacks. This video shows the demo project at the point before we transposed it down, started the lyrical ideas and recorded the guitar and cello. I show how it progressed from a simple 4/8 bar loop into an idea that could be expanded on with vocals. Sometimes a song can take a few sessions to get to this point and at other times it takes only a few minutes. In this case, I spent a morning making this basic concept however the final project took many more weeks of sessions to fully develop once Brad had written the lyrics and main melody. I spent 2 days organizing loops and samples I had sitting on a hard drive from magazines like Computer Music, Future Music and Music Tech that I hadn't organized properly for years. In this video Weezna talks about how to setup your DAW to use drum and guitar loops. First, set the tempo in the DAW to the tempo of the song you want to produce. This depends on the genre of music but it can be any tempo you want, in this case we chose 120 BPM. Then we use the Free Neapolitan Buffaloops pack (Get this for free below) to select a drum track in the tempo of the project which was 120 BPM. From there we can copy and paste the drum tracks on alternating tracks to make up the length of the song we want (In this case it was roughly 1 minute). Then we add the guitar loops to the project and gain down the guitar loops in volume by about 10-14db. From here you can choose to add more loops, edit the loops, or even record over this instrumental. Here is part 2 in the study on how to make banging, relentless techno like SNTS. In part one we made a 1-bar loop, and now we use that to get from 1 bar to a full 5-minute arrangement. The key to this style is creating 4 "checkpoints": four eight-bar loops that each are somewhat interesting and represent different moments in the track. Then, once those 4 checkpoints all sound good, move on to constructing bridges between them using subtractive arrangement and automation. Judge the result for yourself.
