The normal range is 0 to 22 mm/hr for men and 0 to 29 mm/hr for women. The upper threshold for a normal sed rate value may vary somewhat from one medical practice to another. Your sed rate is one piece of information to help your doctor check your health. Talk to your doctor about what your sed rate results mean in light of your symptoms and the results of your other diagnostic tests. Accuracy of test results A number of conditions can affect the properties of blood, thereby affecting how quickly red blood cells sink in a sample of blood. So information about inflammatory disease — what your doctor intends to learn from the sed rate test — can be obscured by the influence of other conditions. These complicating factors include: Advanced age Anemia Pregnancy Kidney problems Thyroid disease Some cancers, such as multiple myeloma Infection Your doctor will take into account possible complicating factors when interpreting the results of your sed rate test. An ESR test can identify and measure inflammation, in general, in your body. However, it doesn’t help pinpoint the precise cause of inflammation. That’s why the ESR test is rarely performed alone. Instead, your doctor will likely combine it with other tests to determine the cause of your symptoms. Also, if you already have an inflammatory condition, your doctor may order an ESR test as part of your routine lab work to make sure your current treatment plan is working. ESR test results are measured in millimeters per hour (mm/hr). The higher the number, the higher the likelihood of inflammation. Overall, females naturally have higher ESR levels Understanding abnormal ESR test results An abnormal ESR result doesn’t diagnose any particular disease. It just identifies potential inflammation in your body and indicates a need to look further. An abnormally low value would be near 0. It’s hard to state an exact value because these tests fluctuate, and what is ultimately considered too low may vary from one person to the next. This test isn’t always reliable or meaningful. Many factors can affect your results, such as: older age medication use pregnancy menstruation Some causes of abnormal ESR test results are more serious than others, but many aren’t a huge concern. It’s important not to worry too much if your ESR test results are abnormal. Instead, work with your doctor to find out what’s causing your symptoms. They’ll usually order follow-up tests if your ESR results are too high or low. Causes of high ESR test results There are multiple causes of a high ESR test result. Some common conditions associated with a higher rate include: systemic and localized inflammatory and infectious diseases (local or widespread infection) tissue injury or ischemia (lack of blood to a tissue) trauma certain types of cancer, including some types of lymphoma and multiple myeloma older age pregnancy anemia kidney disease diabetes heart disease blood or vascular diseases blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis) obesity thyroid disease An abnormally high ESR can indicate the presence of cancerous tumors, especially if no inflammation is found. I was getting some bad video noise in my SPC Maker C120 build using an old Eachine Minicube (from a Lizard 95) and VTX03. I decided to try a low ESR capacitor on the battery leads and it cleaned-up a decent amount (but not all) of the noise. For me it was an effective solution. The diagnosis of tuberculosis as got a very wide spectrum right from the time you have a very easy way to find out whether the sputum brought by the person has got an acid fast bacilli which can be diagnosed very easily or a chest x ray which is showing signs of tuberculosis. But once the disease is very atypical, it is very difficult to make a very strong diagnosis of tuberculosis even though it is rampant, it is common, it affects most of the parts of the body so there are many tests done which the doctors like to interpret and come close to the diagnosis. Some of these tests are CBC, ESR, Mantoux test, chest xray, hemoglobin dropping which also seems like a chronic disease. With all these tests unless and until you have a background what kind of patient you are dealing, whether this immune is compromised or not, whether his nutrition is down or not, whether the patient has got a proper exposure to tuberculosis, whether the patient is vaccinated prior or not, what are the coexisting diseases in the body when you are trying to diagnose tuberculosis in the body. This interpretation of the reports along with the clinical condition of the patients becomes extremely important. So I would say that there are probabilities of diagnosing tuberculosis by looking at the reports which are mentioned in the question like ESR or Mantoux or induration, within 24 to 72 hours. But these are only indicative tests. These bring you only closer to the diagnosis but an equally important part is clinical interpretation.
