Synology offers a RAID alternative, SHR, which operates slightly different than a standard RAID. It allows for you to grow an array overtime with disks of different sizes while still getting an increased storage capacity. SHR is simple, there are two types SHR1 and SHR2. SHR1 gives you one disk fault tolerance, SHR2 gives you two disks of fault tolerance. No need to research which RAID level is best, SHR takes care of all of it for you. SHR works by creating virtual groups of RAIDs on the disks in order to get the maximum amount of storage out of your disks. In this video we go over how SHR works when compared to RAID and some of the advantages / disadvantages of choosing it. Synology NAS SHR+BTRFS versus RAID 1+EXT4 - RAID ReBuild Test

What is the difference between SHR and RAID? 🤍 Synology Hybrid RAID or SHR, has been around for quite a while now, and though it has not made the big impact that Synology NAS’ Btrfs file system has, it is still an increasingly popular choice for many when it comes to protecting their hardware and their data in a Hard Drive Enclosure. Both NAS and DAS utilise RAID as a form of protection from an HDD or SSD failing and the consequences of data loss that can follow. It should always be highlighted that both traditional RAID and SHR are NOT forms of Backing up and you should ALWAYS have an offsite or at the very least off-system backup in place creating real-time images and copies of your mission-critical data. However coming back to the subject at hand, which method of redundancy should you be considering for your storage array – RAID or SHR? Order your NAS from the NAS Experts, - 🤍 What is RAID?  RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, was originally many years ago as a way of combining lots of smaller disks together to create a much larger storage volume, with redundancy as a secondary priority. However with the large scale growth of Hard Drives these last 5 years and more, with Terabytes of data becoming available on single disks, the primary function of RAID has shifted towards data protection. That isn't to say that pooling smaller drives does not still happen, but with drives currently available to buy in 14TB such at the Seagate Ironwolf NAS Drive, you can see why the purpose of RAID in an archive and cold storage is more about hardware protection. Available in numerous types, but the most popular of which is below: JBOD – Just a Bunch of Disks, not really a RAID in any shape or form. RAID 0 – A method of combining two hard drives or more into a single GIANT volume of data, however, if you lose one drive, you lose all your data! RAID 1 – Using pairs of drives, this will HALF your total capacity, but give you a complete and up to the second copy of all your data. Meaning if a drive fails, you have an EXACT copy ready to access. RAID 5 – One of the most popular RAID levels, It requires at least 3 drives or more, data is written across the drives in stripes (waves) and across each stripe of data one drive holds a tiny nugget of data called ‘parity’ with is basically a coded blueprint of the data on the other drives in that stripe, then each stripe has the parity deposited on a different disk each time. The result is that if a drive fails, the system can re-build the data using the parity (blueprints) on each stripe. This can take time though and it should also be noted that the read and write of data in a RAID 5 is a little slower than normal as the system has to work out background calculations whilst writing data. RAID 10 – Think of this as a combination of RAID 0 and RAID 1, or RAID 1+0. You require at least 4 drives and drives are paired up as 2x2. The result is that you have two hard drives whose capacity to added together, and another pair of drives creating real-time copies (again, up to the second) of all the data. Probably the most expensive of all the RAID types here in terms of cost per GB, but gives you much MUCH higher read and write speeds compared to other RAID levels. Make Synology NAS Run Faster?... Default SHR 2 or RAID 6 👨🏻

00:04:23

SPOILER: Switch from SHR to RAID... In this in performance review, I go through the process of switching my setup from SHR to RAID to let you know how much faster a vanilla RAID 6 setup is compared to the recommended system default of SHR. RESULTS For transferring 35GB of data. Synology NAS SHR2 Encrypted Volume: 25 minutes Synology NAS RAID6 Unencrypted Volume: 5 and half minutes. QNAP NAS RAID6 Encrypted Volume: 2 minutes and 11 seconds. Unfortunately I didn't get round to testing RAID6 Encrypted performance on a Synology, but just a word of warning, please make sure you choose wisely when setting up your NAS, as once you go with the system default of SHR, you're stuck with it. There's no way to migrate it over to RAID. SHR does give you extra flexibility when adding different sized drives, but in my experience it is very slow. Storage is important for creative professionals, whether you are a single user or a team where pooling data in important a Network Attached Storage, aka NAS might be the device that you want to consider. Synology is a system that I have been using for close to a decade now and it one that I recommend to all of my friends and my clients that I consult with. You can have a large storage pool with redundancy build in, so that if something should happen you data are safe (even with this redundancy you still need to back up your data). Synology has an easy to use but powerful user web interface that I prefer and it tells you in realtime what is happening to your storage pool. The later models also have a PCI-E slot so that a 10 gigabit (Gbe) card can be installed so that you can get speeds in the range of 500 MB/s and up Writes and close to 1000 MB/s Read depending on the setup, number of drives and RAID Type. Any Synology SHR is a RAID system that offer the most flexibility of any RAID systems out there to date. In this video, because I am upgrading my array, drives are empty and they are ready for a crash test. So this video will include me crashing both SHR 1 & 2 in different scenario. I am crashing this, so you don't have to. And when you run into this situation you'll know how to remedy it. Please give this video a like and subscribe if you are new! Synology NAS SHR+BTRFS versus RAID 1+EXT4 - VIDEO PERFORMANCE

That isn’t to say that pooling smaller drives does not still happen, but with drives currently available to buy in 8TB such at the Seagate Archive Drive, you can see why the purpose of RAID in archive and cold storage is more about hardware protection. SHR is far more automatic RAID choice and designed for the less technically minded to protect their data from hardware failure, without having to delve to deeply into complex matters like parity and striping. It is also significantly easier to set up and considerably more scalable than traditional RAID. It is not supported on all Synology NAS server devices but I would recommend checking in advance that your chosen Synology NAS can utilise SHR here. But otherwise if your NAS can support it, SHR arrives with a host of benefits both in terms of deployment speed and in maximum available capacity. SHR doesn’t arrive in multiple types like RAID, but in just two different versions. SHR and SHR-2. SHR gives you the ability protect your data from 1 lost hard drive and SHR-2 protects you from two. Synology DS1621xs+ NAS Drive Review 🤍 To say that I have looked at a lot of different devices over the years would be a fantastic understatement. Nevertheless, when I finally got my hands on the new Synology DS1621xs+ NAS drive, I have to admit I was excited. For those of you that have followed the Synology NAS brand over the years, along with numerous positive aspects of both their hardware and software series, there has always been one subject of which they have been fantastically abstinent in pursuing at the desktop level - 10Gbe. The subject of desktop profile solutions that are equipped with 10Gbe is something that Synology has resisted for an incredibly long time. That isn't to say that they hey have never pursued 10 gigabit at all, from a series of well equipped upgrade PCIe cards that enable the 10 x Nick connection, to numerous rackmount solutions that arrived with the sport, they do understand it's value. However the Synology DS1621xs+ is the first Intel powered desktop solution with 10Gbe they have ever released, as well as bringing numerous other Synology brand hardware options to the mix. With it slightly intimidating price tag, it is quite the investment on day one. so today, let's take a good look at the Synology DS1621xs+ 10g Nas and decide if it's deserves your data.
