Showing a very simple solar panel installation that anyone can do an afford. Homesteading off the grid and on the mountain certainly has its challenges but there's no place we'd rather live. We restored the old camp and transformed it into a cozy home for ourselves, then we cleared more land, built a workshop and greenhouse and spent the late part of the winter starting seeds and now we're busy planting our first garden on the mountain. Little by little we're reaching our goals of having a self sufficient homestead. This is a tour of our off grid solar powered home in Montana. We have 10 acres of property that is near a Wilderness area. We built this cabin which is very rustic and was made using reclaimed barnwood, hand hewn logs, and rusty metal roofing. It does have many modern conveniences though! Watch to the end to see how much this property cost. Off grid living means different things to different people. For some it means total self sufficiency. For others it means providing your own electricity with solar. Does off grid living mean that you can't live comfortably or that you can't have modern conveniences? I don't think so. Tell me in the comments what you think off grid living means. You can get custom dovetail jig plans, free cabin plans and lots of log cabin building how-to info at my website: 🤍

We will show you our journey of the building constructing a small rustic live-edge off grid cedar sided log cabin built by a group of friends by hand. This is how we built a small cabin in the woods on a small budget. We will show you how we hand dug our post holes to hold the cabin up, right up to installation of the custom built front door, all using a portable saw mill. You can see the whole built including full commentary here: 🤍 To purchase a Norwood Sawmill please use this link: 🤍 This cabin build is something my brother and I really wanted to do ever since we were kids, playing around in the forest, coupled with whatever materials we had from the local infill to build all sorts of forts. Now we build a full habitable cabin First we start by digging in reclaimed pressure treated posts by hand using a shovel. Next we cut and harvest dead-standing cedar and pine trees for the structure including the 2x4's, ridge beams, and sidding. We must use battery powered hand tools because there is now power at this location in the forest. We use reclaimed windows from a house demolition and install a used fireplace. The roof is supplied by Vic West and goes up quickly with screws that have rubber gaskets. The door is custom build using cedar. The deck is held up by pine logs (dead standing) and covered with cedar. Season 2 will cover more of the build including the interior and outbuildings for things like off grid power. As always we are using our HD36 Norwood Portable Sawmill. Instagram: 🤍 SPONSORS Briggs and Stratton: 🤍 Norwood Portable Sawmill: 🤍 Vic West (Roof): 🤍 A big struggle with our cabin is keeping it warm using natural materials that are inherently leaky. So we really need to close in all the gaps. Become part of MY TRIBE: 🤍 Kevin: 🤍wood_chucker_987 Whenever we run out of lumber, we just mill more wood from trees that are right on the property. We'll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv's, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient. We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don't have to kiln dry the wood or let it season. Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin. In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin. We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low. Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings. Stephanie and Joel share their 14-year journey of building a home from reclaimed materials, living off-grid with solar power, and growing a lot of their own food, from fruits and veggies to milk, meat, and honey. They built their home on shared land using materials they salvaged from the dump, wood from a building they took apart themselves, and whatever free stuff they could get their hands on. They had no electricity in the beginning so they only had candles. Eventually, they got a solar panel and a battery to run lights, and the systems have evolved from there. They now have a wood cookstove for heat and cooking in the winter, 5 solar panels and 4 lithium batteries for electricity (plus a generator to supplement on cloudy days), a washing machine, a propane fridge and stove for summertime cooking, and a thermostat controlled propane stove so they don't have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire. For water they have a quarry on the land which they draw from to fill a reservoir in their loft. From there, the water is gravity fed into the kitchen and bathroom. Their drinking water comes from a well on the property. The toilet is an Airhead urine diverting toilet. The cabin has a master bedroom in the loft and a main-floor bedroom that's split into two sleeping spaces for their kids. They have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living room area, and the bathroom is closed in with a beautiful bottle wall. There's also a sunroom they recently added to the front of the house to bring in natural light, passive solar heating, and to grow food in the winter (with the help of LED grow lights). For work, Joel owns a tree service business, and Stephanie runs an off-grid Airbnb business. This off-grid cabin is an escape from the high stress of busy work life. The brief was to capture that and design a building as a piece of furniture with everything the client needs built-in. The only furniture allowed was a low table and mattress on the sleeping loft. The cabin opens onto an east and west deck, capturing morning and afternoon sun while affording views to the south. A high roof allowed solar panels and a skylight to catch sun from over the trees. Designed by maguiredevine.com.au #architecture #cabin #minimalism Music: 7:42AM by Hotel Neon. Download a Free 30-day Trial of AutoCAD: 🤍 Located on the north of Bruny Island, Killora Bay is an off grid cabin surrounded by untouched bushland and wild grass trees. The vibrant forest landscape embraces the home, allowing the residents to connect with nature and live privately in the delicate environment. The site, with its natural clearing, came with certain restrictions that included a predetermined building zone, which informed the scale of the off grid cabin’s structure. The restrictions poised a challenge that ended up being integral to the design of the off grid cabin. The architecture needed to be flexible – the home’s small floorplan meant that each building element needed to work hard to achieve a comfortable and versatile space. This included having fold-out beds to work as part of the joinery, allowing rooms to be used for different functions when needed. The internal spaces were designed with high ceilings and glass windows to bring light and movement into the interior design. Remaining connected with nature, the external greenery frames the interior rooms, with sunlight casting ever-changing shadows indoors. As an off grid cabin, the sliding doors allow the home to embrace the exterior as its own. The material palette of the home is simple, giving the opportunity for the landscape to speak first. As an off grid cabin, it was important that the materials met bushfire regulations, but also worked in harmony with the surrounding forest landscape. The dark-stained timber cladding contrasts against the white concrete poured within the interior – the concrete has a raw finish and continues to bring the landscape’s earthy palette inward. In this video I build a 12x16 off grid cabin in the woods . a great nature viewing cabin with lots of windows.I built this cabin with mostly rough sawn lumber , and discounted and second hand materials. this project took about a month to build , including restoring the wood stove and filming everything . the cost was about $4,500. I saved a lot of money buying all the windows second hand , the door was free . Another way I saved money was using rough sawn lumber from the amish to frame the walls and side the exterior. the wood stove was one we bought second hand as well , it was in rough shape but I restored it . And one last money saving was I found a place that sold cabin grade tongue and groove pine at a discounted price . Check out this playlist for the entire series on this cabin 🤍
Last September we built this cabin for weekend getaways. It is fully off-grid and costs less than $5000 (cad) to build. The cabin is warm enough for winter stays and has two levels. It is our first cabin build and we are so proud. It took us two weeks to complete (excluding material collection). We hope you enjoy the tour. We would also like to thank the shared property owner, Britt, for her contributions on this project. She collected materials, helped in the design, prepared the land, and provided some sweet decor. Twenty years ago Andrew Michler bought a $60,000 solar shack in the Colorado mountains that “immediately fell apart” and inspired two decades of experiments in off-grid living. Today, he and his wife live in the reconfigured shack and he has turned a former shed on the property into an ultra low-consuming Passive House (Passivhaus). “Passive House is an international building standard that focuses on how to reduce energy consumption in building by about 90% and they did it by physics really it wasn’t developed by builders it was developed by physicists,” explains Michler. “Everything how a building interacts with its environment, the thermal dynamics of how heat transfers through materials, the way that energy is produced in the building, how solar gains come into the building or are avoided in a building so this entire building is basically designed in a spreadsheet.” The home is shaped in a wedge which helps with passive solar orientation and also helps avoid unnecessary surface area and heat loss. The wedge also contributes to an unconventional open plan interior which includes a hanging net bed. Last issue I made a floor/foundation for my cabin in the woods. I impregnated the frame with insect and moisture protection. Also painted the floor. For someone who is building a cabin like this for the first time, I think it turned out pretty good. Today I assembled the front and back walls and installed the joists on the roof. If I can build my cabin off the grid...everyone can. It just takes a little patience.
